Next to the Trinity and the relationship between divine sovereignty and human responsibility, what would you consider to be the most difficult of all theological problems? (740) According to Dr. Millard Erickson in his book Christian Theology, the answer is the unity of the person of Christ. After concluding that Jesus is fully God and fully human, as reflected in the orthodox creeds and the revelation of Scripture, Erickson suggests that the debate over the unity of Christ one of the most difficult subjects to understand in theology. Admittedly most students of Christology, let alone the average church goer, find the debate over Nestorianism, Eutychianism, etc. to be rather confusing and unnecessary.

However, though the doctrine of the unity of Christ remains difficult to grasp and articulate, Erickson argues it is also an issue of the greatest importance (740). Why? He explains:

We have already explained that Christology in general is important because the incarnation involved a bridging of the metaphysical, moral, and spiritual gap between God and the human race. The bridging of this gap depended upon the unity of deity and humanity within Jesus Christ. For if Jesus was both God and a human but the two natures were not united, then, although smaller, the gap remains. The separation of God and the human race is still a difficulty that has not been overcome. If the redemption accomplished on the cross is to avail for humankind it must be the work of the human Jesus. But if it is to have the infinite value necessary to atone for sins of all human beings in relationship to an infinite and perfectly holy God, then it must be the work of the divine Christ as well. If the death of the Savior is not the work of a unified God-man, it will be deficient at one point or the other. (740)

The early church made this same argument as they were dealing with the initial challenges to the unity of Jesus. In short, if Jesus, as Erickson articulates in the above quote, was not fully human in a real sense but only partially human (in mind or spirit or flesh or whatever) then He dies as our substitute only in a partial sense.

The point of all of this is to show that though theology can at times be difficult to grasp and appear to be the splitting of hairs, it is always relevant. Our understanding of the gospel hinges, really, on what we believe about the unity of Jesus. Though in some sense the debate appears to be minute and limited to dead men living in the Roman Empire, it affects us all still today.
