Helpful Books for Pastoral Ministry

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about ministry and preaching. As a pastor, I have a responsibility to fulfill the ministry God has given me. Therefore, I have been thinking about some of the resources I have on preaching, pastoral ministry, and church life and some that I should invest in. What follows is a list of such resources that I hope may benefit your pastor.

On Ministry

Letters to Timothy: A Handbook for Pastors by John Bisagno - I start here because it is one of the first and best books I have come across that offers a helpful survey of pastoral ministry and virtually every aspect of it. The upside is the author addresses a host of issues regarding pastoring. The downside is that each chapter is brief, almost always too brief.

Brothers, We Are Not Professionals: A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry by John Piper - The title reflects the first chapter of the book, but this is one book every pastor should read at least once.

Pastor's Handbook by John Bisgno - I have not read this book, but it is on my list. It appears to be very similar to the above but addresses a few other issues, such as the role of executive pastor.

Pastoral Ministry: How to Shepherd Biblically edited by John MacArthur - This is one book each pastor needs to have on his shelf. I also would recommend buying his book on counseling and preaching.

The New Guidebook for Pastors by Mac Brunson and James Bryant - I have not read this book, but it looks promising and from a publisher I trust.

The Deliberate Church: Building Your Ministry on the Gospel by Mark Dever and Paul Alexander

On Preaching

The Hardest Sermons You'll Ever Have to Preach: Help from Trusted Preachers for Tragic Times edited by Bryan Chappell - A helpful resource. Here is my review of it.

Preaching: How to Preach Biblically edited by John MacArthur -As I said in the above, you need to go ahead and have this one on the shelf.

Christ-Centered Preaching: Redeeming the Expository Sermon by Bryan Chapel - You'll probably read this one in seminary.

One Year to Better Preaching: 52 Exercises to Hone Your Skills by David Overdorf - This is a helpful and very practical book every preacher should return to. We must continue to improve our preaching and this is one resource that provides over fifty helpful exercises to do just that. Read my review of it here.

Preaching and Preachers by Martin Lloyd-Jones - a classic.

Church Life

Transforming Church: Creating a New Scorecard for Congregations by Thom Rainer and Ed Stetzer

I Am a Church Member: Discovering the Attitude that Makes the Difference by Thom Rainer

Nine Marks of a Healthy Church by Mark Dever
